PRACTICE FACILITATOR ROLES
Facilitate during practice.
- Be at practice! And beforehand, think through the setlist and any adjustments etc
- Call out songs to be played, following the setlist, adjusting as needed
- Follow setlist – don’t ignore it-- but okay for up to a couple/few on-the-spot suggestions
- Examples: too few did setlist poll; when kids show up we do Sesame Street; there’s a birthday, or other special reason
- Before each song
- Call out a leader and/or figure out who will lead it
- Invite volunteers to lead, if none then assign someone
- As appropriate, ask for input and determine who will solo, who will sing, etc
- After each song
- (Share this with song leader) Invite suggested improvements
- Based on input, decide whether to re-run whole song, do sectionals, practice certain part (like ending or beginning), etc
- Call out next song promptly, try to minimize “down time”
After last song: Facilitate brief group conversation.
- Invite everybody to a brief conversation to
- briefly make band-related announcements
- raise band-related issues they would like to discuss
- and share band-related news
- Facilitate the ensuing discussion
- ensure only one person speaks at a time
- call on people in the order that they raise their hands
- (if necessary) guide people to keep their comments focused and brief
- potentially suggest further discussion continue at some other time and place later
Immediately after practice: Engage next week's Practice Planner.
- Look at Practice Planners rotation list and see who is up next
- contact that person individually (especially easy if they are there in person)
- let them know it's their turn to plan next week's practice
- see if they can commit to doing it
- If they can't commit
- go to the next person on the list, and so on
- don't stop until you have identified someone who commits to being the Practice Planner for the next practice!
